World Figure Sport’s 2026 World Figure & Fancy Skating Championships on black ice will be held October 7-11, 2026 in Lake Placid, NY.

Tips for travelers on the most efficient air travel routes to Lake Placid, NY:

For international travelers, as well as those flying from the West Coast of the United States, Canada, Hawaii, or the Orient, it is generally best to fly direct into Montreal, Quebec, Canada. From there, it is a two-hour drive south to Lake Placid.

Alternatively, you may consider the following options:

  – JFK Airport, NYC: Fly Cape Air to Saranac Lake, NY, which is located 30 minutes from Lake Placid.
– Albany, NY: Most flights are not direct, and then drive to Lake Placid is approximately 2.5 hours.
  – Plattsburgh, NY: This is a convenient option, particularly for direct flights from Florida.
  – Boston, MA: You can take a Cape Air commuter flight from Boston to Saranac Lake, NY.

Trains: The Montrealer to Plattsburgh, NY and then travel by car

• From NYC to Albany on Amtrack and then travel by car

Amtrak Adirondack Returning to the Rails – Railway Amtrack provides service to the Lake Placid area via the Adirondack line from NYC (Penn Station) to Westport, NY (WSP), which is about 40 minutes away. A dedicated Amtrak Thruway shuttle bus connects the Westport station directly to Lake Placid. The total journey takes approximately 6 hours.  

Key Details for Amtrak to Lake Placid: Arrival Station: Westport, NY (WSP) is the primary stop for Lake Placid, located roughly 35-40 miles away.
Alternative Station: Plattsburgh, NY (PLB) is another option, though typically less convenient for direct transport to the village.
Shuttle Service: The Amtrak Thruway shuttle bus (often requiring a combined ticket booking) connects to/from the station to the village of Lake Placid.
Booking: It is highly recommended to book the entire trip (train + shuttle) via the Amtrak website to ensure a seamless transfer.

Alternative Transport: Adirondack Trailways buses operate from NYC Port Authority to Lake Placid directly.

We sequester judges to avoid bias. The referee watches the skater and notes penalty points.  The examiner does not see the skater and has no knowledge of any penalty points.  Penalty points are given if a skater places a foot down or any other body or equipment part onto the ice.

World Figure Sport is an independent international sports body that operates under its own jurisdiction, rules, and sanctions since its founding in 2015.  The upcoming 2026 season is the 12th Anniversary of the World Figure & Fancy Skating Championships on black ice.  WFS has held International Workshops, Exams & Competitions from Alaska to Germany.  Members and future members may take WFS’s Skating Exams either virtually worldwide by appointment or in-person with a reservation.

​Eligibility to skate with WFS is – simply to be human! Other helpful qualities are an open mind with an eagerness to learn, mindfulness (focus/concentration), perseverance, patience, effort, and a pure love of skating. 

Any skater from the US, Canada, or other countries are welcome to skate with World Figure Sport and participate in our Figure & Fancy Skating opportunities wearing hockey or figure skates.  If anyone or entity tells someone otherwise, that person or organization, is following illegal eligibility rules that have been deemed so by an anti-trust investigation.  Note: This includes any members of that specific organization that have followed those illegalities.  

With WFS, all types of skaters (representing the countries in the world) are eligible and welcome to participate in the sport discipline of Figure & Fancy Skating (as long as they show good sportsmanship and do not cheat).
